- Write things down and take notes during class.
- Don’t be afraid to talk because you are afraid of making a mistake. If you are not making a mistake, you probably aren’t trying something new.
- Language teachers don’t have a magic wand to make you be fluent in another language.
- There is no quick, be-fluent-in-30-days trick. Do not fall for that trap.
- You will have to put in a lot of work into learning a new language, but that doesn’t mean that your path cannot be enjoyable.
- Don’t be detoured from your learning path by people who are impatient with your speech progress.
- Don’t feel pressure from other people to speak faster. Take your time and speak clearly.
- Don’t equate speaking fast with speaking well.
- Ask for correction. Ask friends, and if you feel comfortable, colleagues, to correct your language.
- Relax! It’s a process. You will have weeks where you can see and feel the progress, and weeks when you feel that your learning has stagnated. This is all normal.
